Detroit city of hope (and art)

“‘Excellently observed,’ answered Candide; ‘but let us cultivate our garden.’”

This page contains musings on urban agriculture, living green, and vermiculture, and, increasingly, permaculture and aquaponics. With friends, I have started contributing thoughts and experiences about cultivating an Urban Micro Garden.

Urban Agriculture

Worm Composting Bins

One of my favorite urban hobbies and means of assuaging carbon guilt is vermiculture–making worm composting bins. You can do it in any balcony or bathroom with a minimal amount of tools. All of your food waste (except animal products) goes into the bins and comes out as “worm tea” (castings) that you can feed to your houseplants. The classic worm compost bin instructions in my opinion are here. Please contact me for formatted versions of these instructions. I also have Chinese-language versions.

The picture to the right is my original worm compost bin setup on my balcony in Beijing’s gulou neighborhood circa summer 2009.

hope

Searching for domains orthogonal to history, or just plants growing out of buildings. These things give me hope. What gives you hope?
